The complete guide to Vannamei partial harvests

Published on Oct 18, 2025 · 8 min read
Abstract background Farmer calculating

Partial harvesting (or selective harvesting) is one of the most effective strategies to manage biomass density and generate mid-cycle cash flow. However, doing it without accurate data can disrupt your final yield calculation.

Why Partial Harvest?

As Vannamei shrimp grow past 15 grams, the biomass load in your pond increases exponentially. This limits the dissolved oxygen available and can stunt the growth of the remaining shrimp. By removing the largest 20-30% of your crop mid-cycle, you create space and oxygen for the remaining shrimp to reach premium 30-count sizes faster.

The Math Behind the Net

The biggest mistake farmers make is losing track of their total biomass after a partial harvest. If you pull 1.5 tons of 50-count shrimp, how many animals are left in the pond?

Before Aquanubandh, farmers had to guess. Now, the app handles this automatically. When you log a "Partial Harvest" event, you simply enter the total kg removed and the average count. The app instantly recalculates your remaining population, adjusts the survival curve, and provides a new target feed schedule for the next morning.

"Pro Tip: Always do a partial harvest early in the morning when the temperature is cool to minimize stress on the remaining population."

Timing is Everything

Don't partial harvest just because you need cash. Use your app's growth curve data. If your ADG (Average Daily Growth) starts flatlining before Day 70 despite good water quality, your pond is likely over capacity. That is the moment to drop the nets.
